Took a lazy afternoon ride through Knightville and Newtown the other day. It was a hot summer day and the dry air quickly dried my mouth and the sun stun my arms. I decided to start through Anagance Ridge to get all the big hills over with in the beginning. After cresting Anagance Ridge I stopped to take in the view then coasted down into Knightville.

With a slight headwind I passed grazing cows and freshly cut hayfields. Shortly after passing Giermend’s Gasthof Old Bavarian Restaurant I turned onto the Oldfield Road. It’s a dirt road, but its in great shape, probably better shape that some of the paved roads in the area. I stopped in the shade of a lone pine tree, drank heavily from my water bottle.

Up ahead I came to the Oldfields Covered Bridge which was featured on the Canadian Quarter coin in 1992 to commemorate Canada’s Confederation. It was quiet down there, no cars in sight, and I could hear Smith Creek flowing beneath the bridge. Inside it was dark and cool. Sun shone through cracks and played in the elaborate truss work.

With all the hill-climbing out of the way and the prevailing winds at my back I was afforded a mellow ride back to Corn Hill through Newtown. As my mind settled into the steady pace of the flat landscape I thought about the bike fest and smiled that many more people will soon get to enjoy this too.

Cedar Cafe Now Open Later

The Cedar Cafe, at the Corn Hill Nursery, has extended its summer hours and will now be open until 7 pm on Fridays and Saturdays. This is great news for cyclists wishing to finish there day with a meal or a drink on the Cafe’s Patio.

The Corn Hill Nursery offers a great central location for cyclists to park and ride from.

Evening Ride

Just got back from a great evening ride around Corn Hill. The sun was starting to set as I left the driveway with my Dad. We headed around block, as its known, and had only 2 cars pass us the whole time. A rainstorm in the afternoon had left the land laden with moisture and as it began to cool pockets of mist formed in sheltered corners. There always seem to be something interesting happening with the weather around here. The summer clouds are remarkably dynamic in Corn Hill creating powerful sunset over the open hills and in the early morning light you’ll find fog lying in the valley floors after a warm summer night.

Summer Comes Early

With the Corn Hill Bicycle Festival two months excitement is already building. Sunny weather and dry pavement have given us all an early taste of the summer biking season.

Corn Hill Bicycle Festival

The Corn Hill Cycle Fest (July 24^th,rain-date July 25^th ) is a day long celebration of bicycling. The backroads around Corn Hill provide an idyllic getaway for cyclists in southern New Brunswick. Whether you’re a casual rider, that likes to pedal with your family or an avid cyclist- we know you’ll enjoy the wide open views and quiet country roads of Corn Hill.

The festival day will provide you with a great introduction to Corn Hill’s cycling possibilities. A number of long and short guided rides will take place throughout the day – including a women’s ride. Plus, a series of workshops will focus on basic bicycle mechanics, road safety, proper gear shifting, and cycling with your family.

So come on out – ride the rolling hills, enjoy lunch, meet others, and learn a thing or two about biking.
